Meet the founder of Coastwise Marine Design Inc., Antonio Salguero:
I grew up on the New England shoreline and was attracted to boat design, construction, repair and operation by the Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway on Martha’s Vineyard, MA where I served as an apprentice in my late teens. While there I re-built my Danish Spidsgatter sloop which I sailed to Maine when I enrolled in the Maine Maritime Academy's Yacht and Small Craft Naval Architecture School in 1990.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude with an Associate of Science in 1992.
From 1993-2023 I have been based in Port Townsend, WA. I have been both a veteran of the local marine trades and designer involved in projects here as well as elsewhere in Puget Sound. I have collaborated with virtually all of the commercial and recreational boat builders in the Port of Port Townsend and have expanded that reach in recent years to aluminum boat builders in Port Angeles, WA. I have sub-contracted with Anderson Yacht Design, Kasten Marine Design and assisted in design projects at Pacific Mariner in LaConner WA, Townsend Bay Marine in Port Townsend, WA and others.
To supplement to my design skills, I have worked as a shipwright (in MA, ME and primarily the Port of Port Townsend, WA) and as a commercial fisherman in both the seine and gillnet fisheries in Alaska. I have also worked as crew and skipper in the charter sailing yacht trade in New England and the Caribbean. My experiences on the water have been incorporated into my designs, resulting in safe, reliable craft that work.
I have enjoyed the opportunity to teach small craft naval architecture at the NW School of Wooden Boatbuilding, and I support the local Port Townsend Marine Trades Association(board member 2006). I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to work as both a designer and builder during the last 20 years of growth of the marine trades in Port Townsend, which taken as a whole now is the largest employer in Jefferson County where Port Townsend is located.
In 2013, I began sub-contracting for Tullio Celano of Crescere Marine Engineering expanding my experiences to larger commercial craft. From 2018-2021, I sub-contracted for Hockema Group Seattle WA.
